OVERVIEW: This lesson is designed as an introduction to the importance of global population.

TIME REQUIRED: 2 84 minute block periods or 4 45 minute class periods

SUGGESTED GRADE LEVELS: Grades 7 - 12

INTERDISCIPLINARY APPLICATIONS: English

NEW JERSEY CORE CONTENT STANDARDS: 6.9.8, 6.9.9

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES:

  1. Students will compare and contrast global population issues.
  2. Students will interpret visual material.
  3. Students will discuss the impact of population on people's lives.

STRATEGIES:

  1. Brainstorming - What are the effects of global population?
  2. Suggested Video: “Zero Population Growth” Teacher should write questions to go with the film (1995)
  3. A Toss of the Dice: (permission from Earth Matters) Ask the students what this means. Discuss the activity. Repeat with a Limited Family Program—Discuss with a One Child Policy—Discuss the issue of values—How dare we go into another country and do this? (2 or 3 days)

  2. Earth Matters

ASSESSMENT:

  1. Suggest students write a journal reaction to what they learned as a result of the introductory lesson.
