The Reformation was a time of religious crisis for the Roman Catholic Church during the 1500’s. This Reformation led to the establishment of various types of Protestant churches.

Behind these Protestant Churches were the leaders who spoke up against the ways of the Catholic Church, making their differing ideas known. Some had direct issues with practices within the Roman Catholic Church; some had different ideas on the relationship between Church and State, while another had selfish intentions in mind. No matter what the driving force behind these ideas, each had a direct impact on religious practices not only during the 1500’s but also on society today. It is some of these leaders on which we are about to concentrate.

The class will be split up into four groups. Each group will be assigned a leader of the Protestant Reformation. Leaders to be assigned include Martin Luther of Germany, John Calvin of France, King Henry VIII of England, and John Knox of Scotland.

Each group will be responsible for a 7-10 minute oral presentation on their assigned Protestant Reformation leader. The presentation should include but is not limited to the following information:

• A biography of the leader.
• Detailed information on their role, ideas, and accomplishments during the Protestant Reformation.
• Key writings produced as to religious beliefs.
• Information as to whether or not these ideas have an impact or are openly practiced in our society today.
• A visual aid which will supports the information being presented.

Each group will be given a fixed amount of in class research time as well as a fixed amount of in class presentation preparation time. Any additional work that needs to be done on the presentation must be done outside of class time.

Grading of this assignment will be dependent upon research information, oral presentation and visual aid.
