The United States of America has long been the icon of freedom
for people overseas. They have arrived on our shores looking
for the opportunities they could not find in their home countries.
As the country has become more diverse, it is increasingly
important that a mutual understanding exists between those
who have immigrated to this country and those whose ancestors
came here long ago. Cultural understanding can only be achieved
if it is taught. Whether this takes place in the home or in
our schools, there must be global literacy in the United States
and any other country experiencing massive immigration that
includes an understanding of the immigrant's experience. The
lesson plans and resources included in this module are designed
to facilitate those efforts.
