Procedures:

  1. Teacher uses puppets to engage students in recycling questions like:
    When is your birthday?
    How old are you?
  2. Teacher reads Caps for Sale translated into the target language.
    Teacher engages students in the story.
    Teacher models; students repeat.
    They take on the role of the monkeys
    Use TPR actions throughout
    Have children repeat repetitive phrases
    Teacher puts on his/her head, 2/3 hats representative of target culture and proceeds to sell hats to a puppet. Teacher models dialogue.
    T: Hello, hats, hats for sale, (state amount of) a hat. Hello, may I help you?
    P: Hello! Yes, I would like a (color) hat. How much does it cost?
    T: It costs 2 (target country's money).
    P: Here is the money. Thank you.
    T: Here is your hat. Good-bye.
    Teacher asks for a student volunteer to model dialogue.
    Two student volunteers try the dialogue with teacher assistance.
    Students work in pairs to practice the dialogue.
    Student volunteers present their role-play of Caps for Sale

Materials:

  1. Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina Teacher will have to translate into the target language, type text and tape on top of English text.
  2. Translation is available in Spanish
  3. Two or three hats representative of the target culture: beret, sombreroo (Optional: samples of hats from National Textbook Companyo
  4. Vive le français - Learning System A Master 6
  5. Viva el español - Learning System A Master 6
  6. Target country's money

Assessment: On-going informal assessment.

Evaluation: 85% accuracy on assessment.
