Objective(s): Students will be able to:

  1. Identify food and gift shops representative of target country's culture.
  2. Use sentences for the purchase of food and gifts needed for a birthday party.

Vocabulary/Structures:

  1. Food stores (representative of target culture: open market, bakery, and/or supermarket...), gift stores (department store, bookstore, and/or music shop...)
  2. May I help you?
  3. I would like a (color) hat.
  4. How much does it cost?
  5. Its costs __(target country's currency).
  6. Here is the money.
  7. Here is the __(object purchased).

Procedures:

  1. On different classroom walls, teacher hangs flash cards of target country's food and gift stores.
  2. Teacher states names of store types; students provide choral response.
  3. Teacher sets different items near each of the "stores." Teacher states names of each item in each of the "stores."
    1. Bakery flashcard: picture of target country's birthday cake
    2. Supermarket: plates, plastic ware
    3. Bookstore: books
    4. Music store: CD's
    5. Department store: toys
  4. Using a puppet, teacher models and recycles the shopping dialogue introduced in the previous lesson.
  5. Teacher models the dialogue with student volunteer.
  6. Students work in pairs to practice dialogue.
  7. Student volunteers present their shopping for the birthday party dialogues.

Materials:

  1. Flash cards of target country's food and gift stores (Optional) Teacher's Discovery: Mexico JY136, Paris JY144
  2. Gifts representative of target country
  3. Picture of birthday cakes
  4. Books from target country
  5. CDs from target country,
  6. Toys from target country
  7. Supplies for party: Plates, Plastic ware
  8. Puppet

Assessment: On-going informal assessment.

Evaluation: 85% accuracy on assessment.
