  1. Apply sentence structures from school store to the purchase of birthday presents for a friend.
  2. Create a conversation at a birthday party.

  4. Recycle shopping dialogue from two previous lessons
  5. Possibilities for birthday party conversation:
    • Surprise!
    • Come in and sit down!
    • Here is your gift.
    • Thank you.
    • It is wonderful.
    • Are you hungry?
    • Here is some cake.
    • Thank you. It is delicious.
    • Bye

Procedures:

  1. Teacher explains in the target language that they will be talking about birthday parties, going shopping, and celebrating someone's birthday.
  2. Teacher reads Happy Birthday by Joy Cowley.
  3. Teacher asks class, "When is your birthday?" Volunteer states his/her birthday. Teacher gives him/her a party hat and declares that today is the date of that student's birthday and writes that day on the blackboard.
  4. Class sings "Happy Birthday" to that student.
  5. Using sentence structures found in the birthday books, teacher informs the class that they will go shopping for birthday surprises.
  6. Teacher and two student volunteers model a store dialogue for the purchase of various gifts.
  7. Small groups prepare their own store dialogue. Teacher circulates to assist and to reinforce the use of the target language.
  8. Volunteers come to store to go shopping
  9. Teacher and student volunteers model one possible dialogue at a birthday party. While modeling, teacher elicits from role-playing volunteers and from the class different greetings, birthday wishes, exclamations of surprise and delight, thank you for gifts, and friendly conversation at a party.
  10. Small groups prepare their own birthday dialogue.
  11. Teacher circulates to assist and to reinforce the use of the target language.
  12. Student volunteers perform their own birthday conversations.
  13. Teacher plays target culture's birthday music and everyone is invited to dance.

  1. Happy Birthday Song
  2. Optional: Joyeux Anniversaire in Sing, Dance, Laugh and Eat Quiche 1 or Feliz Cumpleaños in Sing, Dance, Laugh, and Eat Tacos 1 By Barbara MacArthur
  3. Happy Birthday by Joy Cowley
  4. Spanish Translation is available from The Wright Group at http://www.wrightgroup.com
  5. Teacher will need to translate into French

Assessment: On-going informal teacher assessment during the presentational role-plays and the interpersonal small group preparation and discussion.

Evaluation: 85% accuracy on assessment.
