Objective(s): Students will be able to:

  1. Name family members
  2. Identify family's place of origin
  3. Write short sentences stating family member and his/her place of origin.

Vocabulary/Structures:

  1. Is this your (family member)?
  2. Yes, this is my (family member). Mohter, father, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather.
  3. Where are you from?
  4. I am from (name of country).
  5. Are you (nationality)?
  6. Yes, I am (nationality).
  7. Is you (family member) (nationality)?
  8. Yes/No, my (family member) is (nationality).

Procedures:

  1. Play a song about a family, for example, My Large Family or a song about one's nationality such as Paco.
  2. Teacher uses family puppets to introduce family members.
  3. Teacher elicits answer to this question "Is this a (family member)?
  4. Teacher distributes pictures of different families to small groups.
  5. Teacher models identifying different family members.
  6. In groups, students point to picture and identify the family members.
  7. 2-3 groups volunteer to present families to class.
  8. Using a large map, teacher points to his/her country of origin and states his/her nationality.
  9. Teacher asks students their nationality and invites 4/5 students to come point to their country of origin.
  10. Teacher states the nationality of the students. Students repeat.
  11. Teacher writes their nationalities on blackboard.
  12. Teacher points to the country of origin of her grandmother, waves the country flag, and states her nationality.
  13. Teacher asks students the nationality of their grandparents and parents.
  14. Teacher presents flag for some of students' countries of origin.
  15. Teacher models writing about his/her own family. My grandmother is from(country).She is (nationality). My father is from (country). He is (nationality). I am (nationality).

Materials:

  1. My Large Family song from Sing, Dance, Laugh, and Eat Quiche 2 (Taco 2) by Barbara MacArthur· Paco Sing, Dance, Laugh, and Eat Quiche 2 (Taco 1) by Barbara MacArthur
  2. CD player or cassette player
  3. Set of family puppets
  4. 6 - 8 pictures of various families
  5. Large map of the world· Flags of various countries
  6. Pocket chart or poster with the following cloze sentences.

    My grandfather is from __.
    He is ___.
    My grandmother is from __.
    She is __.
    My mother is from __.
    She is__.
    My father is from__.
    He is __.
    My brother is __.
    My sister is __.
    I am __.
  7. Each student has his/her own notebook.

Assessment: On-going informal assessment.

Evaluation: 85% accuracy on assessment.
