Objective(s): Students will be able to:

  1. Identify family members
  2. Describe how each person is feeling
  3. Write sentences describing family members' feelings.

Vocabulary/Structures:

  1. Grandmother, grandfather, mother, father, brother, sister
  2. Nationalities
  3. How are you feeling?
  4. I am feeling well.
  5. I do not feel well.
  6. I am okay.
  7. My (family member) is (feeling).

Procedures:

  1. Play a song about a family, for example, My Large Family
  2. Teacher keeps one family member puppet and distributes the others to volunteers. Teacher asks, "Are you the (family member)? and recycles question, "Are you (nationality)?"
  3. Teacher can refer to map or flags to reinforce nationality identifications.
  4. Teacher collects puppets and uses two of them to dramatize family members' feelings. Teacher places feeling flash cards in a pocket chart
  5. Using choral response, students repeat and use facial expressions to portray feelings.
  6. Teacher holds one puppet and distributes a second one. Teacher and student interview each other about feelings.
  7. Students work in pairs to ask each other, "How are you feeling?"
  8. Student volunteers use puppets to interview each other in front of the class.
  9. On the blackboard, teacher models drawing three of his/her family members. Underneath each, she writes how each family member is feeling. This illustrates the three feelings.
  10. Teacher instructs students to take out their notebooks, draw the faces of two or three family members, and write how he/she is feeling.
  11. Student volunteers share their family portraits and describe their family members' feelings.

Materials:

  1. My Large Family song from Sing, Dance, Laugh, and Eat Quiche Two (Taco Two) by Barbara MacArthur
  2. CD player or cassette player· Family puppets· Flags and/or world map
  3. Pocket chart
  4. Flashcards illustrating three familiar emotions - well, not well, and okay.
  5. Students have a notebook

Assessment: On-going informal assessment.

Evaluation: 85% accuracy on assessment.
