Objective(s): Students will be able to:

  1. Identify the numbers 1 - 20
  2. Calculate simple addition problems
  3. Tell the age of family members under twenty

Vocabulary/Structures:

  1. Numbers 1 - 20
  2. Math equation: 2+3=5
  3. How old are you?
  4. I am __ years old

Procedures:

  1. Play a song about numbers, for example, Count.
  2. Using currency from target language country, teacher counts 1 - 20
  3. Teacher counts various things in the classroom: windows, pencils, chairs, and clocks...
  4. Teacher models use of fact triangle; teacher states the addition equation by reading the two numbers on the bottom of the triangle. See attached fact triangle samples.
  5. Teacher displays flash card fact triangles and asks students to solve the addition problems. ·Pairs of students work together to solve the problems on the handout of addition fact triangles.
  6. Teacher states his/her age. Using pictures of a family with grandparents, he/she states the age of the different people.
  7. Teacher uses grandmother and son puppet to model them asking each other, "How old are you?" They answer, "I am __ years old."· Teacher asks students, "How old are you?"
  8. Teacher helps first student to say, "I am __ years old."· Students work in pairs to ask each other their age.
  9. Teacher and student volunteer model an interview about feelings and age.
  10. Student pairs prepare interview.
  11. Volunteers perform interview.
  12. Teacher draws two family members on the blackboard and writes their age in the target language.
  13. Students take out notebooks in which they will draw pictures of oneself, brother(s), or sister(s). Under each picture, student will write, "He/She is __years old." or "I am __years old."

Materials:

  1. Count song from Sing, Dance, Laugh, and Eat Quiche 2 (Taco 2) by Barbara MacArthur
  2. Twenty of the target country's currency or pictures of this currency
  3. Eleven large flash cards of "Addition Fact Triangles"
  4. Handout of "Addition Fact Triangles"
  5. Family puppets· Picture of family with grandparents
  6. Students have a notebook

Assessment: On-going informal assessment.

Evaluation: 85% accuracy on assessment.
