Objective(s): Students will be able to:

  1. Identify the day and date.
  2. Distinguish between today's date, yesterday's date, and tomorrow's date.
  3. Discuss present, past, and future birthdays and dates.

Vocabulary/Structures:

  1. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
  2. Today is___. Yesterday was ___. Tomorrow will be ___.
  3. My birthday is today.
  4. My birthday was yesterday.
  5. My birthday will be tomorrow.

Procedures:

  1. Play a song about the days of the week, for example, Sabado/Lundi Matin.
  2. Recycle phrases, "When is your birthday? My birthday is___." from previous lessons.
  3. Teacher shows students an authentic calendar from the target culture
  4. Teacher shows students the day and month of her birthday on the calendar.
  5. Students compare and contrast the similarities and differences between our calendar and the target culture's calendar. Elicit the following cultural differences: Days of the week and months of the year are not capitalized. The week begins on Monday.)
  6. Teacher names the current month and days of the week as he/she points to the calendar
  7. Students give choral response.
  8. Teacher models how to identify today's day and date in the target language.
  9. Teacher asks for 3 volunteers to come to the front of the class. One student represents Today, one students represents Yesterday, and one student represents Tomorrow.
  10. Teacher models how to identify today's date, yesterday's date, and tomorrow's date.
  11. Students work in cooperative groups of 3 and prepare to say to the class: My birthday is today, Monday, May 14.
  12. Group volunteers perform for classmates.
  13. Students sing Happy Birthday.

Materials:

  1. Sabado/Lundi Matin song from Sing, Dance, laugh, and Eat Quiche 2 (Taco 2) by Barbara MacArthur.
  2. CD player or cassette player.
  3. An authentic calendar from the target culture· Weather pictures.
  4. Sentence strips with the days of the week.
  5. Pocket chart or poster with the following cloze sentences:
    Today is __.
    Yesterday was___.
    Tomorrow will be ___.
    My birthday is today.
    My birthday was yesterday.
    My birthday will be tomorrow.

Assessment: On-going informal assessment.

Evaluation: 85% accuracy on assessment.
