Objective(s): Students will be able to:

  1. Describe the weather as good or bad for today, yesterday, and tomorrow.
  2. Identify clothing appropriate for different weather conditions.

Vocabulary/Structures:

  1. Hot, cold, sunny, cloudy.
  2. It is hot.
  3. It is cold.
  4. It is sunny.
  5. It is cloudy.
  6. How is the weather today?
  7. How was the weather yesterday?
  8. How will the weather be tomorrow?
  9. Today the weather is___. Yesterday, the weather was ___. Tomorrow the weather will be___.
  10. Pants, shirt, dress, skirt, t-shirt, shorts, socks, shoes, hat, jacket, coat.
  11. Sing a song about the weather, for example, ¿Que tiempo hace hoy? Quel temps fait-il?
  12. Recycle phrases: "Today is my birthday. Yesterday was my birthday. Tomorrow will be my birthday."

Procedures:

  1. Teacher shows students the authentic calendar from the target culture.
  2. Teacher shows students today' date on the calendar.
  3. Teacher asks students; "What is today's date?" Students respond chorally.
  4. Teacher directs students to look out the classroom window.
  5. Teacher describes the weather as good or bad using TPR thumbs up or thumbs down.
  6. Teacher directs students to pictures of different weather conditions: It is sunny. It is cloudy. It is hot. It is cold.
  7. Students listen to teacher as she models correct pronunciation of phrases, and chorally respond.
  8. Teacher reads story, Froggy Gets Dressed, by: Jonathon London. Teacher involves students in the story through use of TPR movements.
  9. Teacher introduces clothing vocabulary.
  10. Teacher and frog puppet model a conversation about what they are wearing for students.
  11. Teacher asks frog puppet; "What are you wearing?" Puppet responds; "I am wearing ___.
  12. Teacher distributes a different weather picture to each group of 4 - 5 students.
  13. Students work in cooperative groups to determine what clothes they will wear according to the weather picture.
  14. Student volunteers perform for their classmates.

Materials:

  1. ¿Que tiempo hace hoy? song from Sing, Dance, Laugh, and Eat Taco 2 by Barbara MacArthur.
  2. Quel temps fait-il? sung to the tune of "This Old Man." (See attached)
  3. CD player or cassette playerˇ An authentic calendar from the target culture.
  4. Weather pictures.
  5. Sentence strips with the weather phrases: It is hot. It is cold. It is sunny. It is cloudy.
  6. (Optional) Book Froggy Gets Dressed, by: Jonathon London with frog doll and clothes.
  7. Lakeshore Learning Co. at http://www.lakeshorelearning.com - LA970.
  8. Pocket chart or poster with the following cloze sentences:
    Today the weather is ___.
    Yesterday, the weather was ___.
    Tomorrow, the weather will be ___.

Assessment: On-going informal assessment.

Evaluation: 85% accuracy on assessment.
